Steven Pressfield writes about Resistance in his book, “The War of Art”.
He writes about it mostly in relation to writing, but it can apply to anything.
I love this book.
Most mornings my alarm goes off at 5:45am. The goal: run.
And almost every morning I meet resistance.
If I don’t leap out of bed immediately, the tiny critic in my head starts in….
The bed is so warm and it’s soooo cold outside.
It’s raining.
I didn’t get a full night’s sleep – the babies were up. The dog woke me. My husband was snoring.
and the biggest lie: I’ll do it later.
My only hope is to remind myself how good I’ll feel when I’m done.
If I get it done now, I’ve got the rest of the day to do what I like, without trying to work it in.
How my day goes 100 times better when I’ve had time, even if it’s only 20 minutes, to myself.
To read. To write. To run.
Some days I win, and some days resistance does….
and I’m working on accepting that with grace (while still trying to get up more often than not).
What’s stops you?
